Protecting the Future by Preserving Mangrove Ecosystems Through Collaboration

Mangroves, often referred to as nature’s guardians, are rare and prolific ecosystems bridging the boundary between land and sea. They play a vital role in sustaining coastal biodiversity and act as nurseries for fish and crustaceans. Mangroves also serve as natural coastal defense mechanisms, mitigating the impacts of storm surges, tsunamis, rising sea levels, and erosion. Their significance extends further: mangrove soils are highly effective carbon sinks, sequestering vast amounts of carbon and contributing to global climate goals. As highlighted by the United Nations Environment Programme, mangroves are indispensable in climate mitigation efforts due to their ability to support carbon trading through sequestration.

Furthermore, mangroves are among the most productive coastal wetlands, storing and sustaining “blue carbon.” According to research published in ScienceDirect, mangrove could boast a gross primary production (GPP) up to five times higher than other ecosystems, emphasizing their unmatched ability to support biodiversity and store carbon.

This unique value of mangroves formed the foundation of discussions during the session “Joint Effort to Preserve Mangrove Ecosystem" at the Indonesia Pavilion on Saturday, 16 November 2024. Esteemed panelists included Satyawan Pudyatmoko, Director General of KSDAE (Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam Ekosistem)Jasmine Doloksaribu, Head of Landscape Conservation & Environment at APP Group; Wening Wulandari, Head of PUSTARHUT (Kepala Pusat Standarisasi Instrumen Kehutanan), Ministry of Forestry; and Vinay Singh, Climate Adaptation and NbS Specialist at IUCN.

Representing Fairatmos, Natalia Rialucky Marsudi, captivated the audience with her presentation on how technology and collaboration can revolutionize mangrove conservation. She underscored the importance of Fairatmos’ AtmosWatch technology, which ensures real-time monitoring and reporting for carbon projects, enhancing transparency and trust. By bridging key stakeholders, AtmosWatch ensures projects are impactful, credible, and aligned with global net-zero goals.
