How The UN SDG Provide a Blueprint for Sustainable Development

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), initially outlined at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012, consist of 17 principles designed to serve as a roadmap for governments and corporations worldwide. These goals aim to improve the well-being of citizens and stakeholders by emphasizing the interconnectedness of economic development, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. The primary focus of the SDGs is to secure a better future for all, addressing current global challenges to create a more sustainable and equitable world.

A central tenet of SDG focuses on how humans can integrate climate considerations into various climate-relevant sectors, from responsible mineral extraction to sustainable urban development, especially efficient energy use and equal protection from climate disasters. The SDGs advocate for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy, and building resilient infrastructure, thus offering a blueprint for balancing growth with environmental stewardship and social equity. This holistic approach ensures that development efforts do not compromise the planet's health or the well-being of future generations.

So, what are the most important climate-based sustainability goals to acknowledge when considering SDGs' role in the world's progressive future development?

SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy - This goal emphasizes the importance of ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. It promotes the transition to renewable energy sources, along with modernizing most of the world's energy grids around a focus on access for all stakeholders and global citizens.

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities - This goal focuses on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Urban development strategies under this goal include sustainable transportation systems, green buildings, and improved urban planning to reduce carbon footprints. Placing a focus on developing better public transportation or building housing and other infrastructure with greener heating and cooling systems, as it's important we consider all factors of how urbanization impacts the climate.

SDG 14: Life Below Water - This goal aims to conserve the sustainably use of the oceans, seas, and marine resources. It highlights a focus on sustainable fishing practices as a means to preserve the global oceans as a food source. Along with maintaining the ocean's health by reducing pollution in areas like the Pacific garbage patch along with restricting chemical dumping, some corporations participate in. Promoting positive ocean practices ensures humans have minimal effect on how the oceans dictate global climate patterns and effects rising sea levels.

SDG 15: Life on Land - This goal promotes the sustainable management of forests, combating desertification, halting and reversing land degradation, and ensuring the continued prominence of biodiverse regions. By protecting and restoring terrestrial ecosystems, people are helping to mitigate climate change through the promotion of the world's greatest carbon absorption system, nature-based solutions.

SDG 13: Climate Action - Finally and arguably the most important is directly addressing climate change; this goal calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. It's essential for all stakeholders in our global system to constantly consider the effects of climate degradation and how their business and personal operations can help protect our planet against climate change. It includes strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity against climate-related hazards and integrating climate change mitigation initiatives into national policies. The effects of climate change must be present in the minds of legislators, business leaders, and individual citizens of our shared world.

The UN, as a regulatory body for the world, provides a roadmap for nations to better position themselves in the interest of prioritizing the future health of the climate. It remains to be seen how actionable these guidelines are and whether net zero will be achievable under these principles. Making it ever more prevalent that in the coming decades all stakeholders involved in the climate protection process should follow the SDG's outline.

About Fairatmos

Fairatmos is a climate technology company that helps you to discover, develop and deliver high quality carbon offset projects at scale. We believe in the power of nature to heal and remove greenhouse gasses from our atmosphere with the help of technology.

Our technology leverages remote sensing and satellite images to help communities and companies to discover their forest carbon credit potential, converting them from logging the forest to preserving and rehabilitating the forest confidently.

With high precision monitoring technology, we help to track carbon project performance and integrity, ensuring the social impact and biodiversity preservation. With confidence in integrity, we connect carbon offsetting companies to quality projects.

Today we have worked with more than 200 asset owners, processing more than 18M hectares of forest carbon potential across South East Asia to deliver the promise of inclusivity.
