From Vision to Action: Minister Hanif Leads Indonesia’s Groundbreaking Journey into Global Carbon Trading in 2025

At the gala dinner in preparation for the launch of international carbon trading, Indonesia’s Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisal Nurofiq, reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to addressing climate change. Held on January 16, 2025, at Hotel Pullman Jakarta, the event gathered ambassadors, cabinet ministers, and representatives from partner nations to discuss Indonesia’s pivotal role in the global carbon market.

Minister Hanif described the launch as a transformative milestone in Indonesia’s sustainability journey, stating, “The initiation of carbon trading marks our commitment to tackling climate change.” He emphasized the government’s strategic efforts to achieve its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets by implementing the Carbon Economic Value (NEK) mechanism. This mechanism includes emissions trading, emission offsets, and performance-based payments, forming a comprehensive approach to carbon management.

The foundation of this initiative is built upon robust regulations, such as Indonesia Presidential Regulation No. 98/2021 and No. 21/2022, which establish the framework for carbon trading systems. Minister Hanif highlighted that transparency and credibility are paramount, with each carbon trading certificate undergoing stringent audits to prevent double claims, ensuring a robust and accountable system.

“The success of carbon welfare relies on collaboration among nations, industries, and communities. It is not merely a government effort but also a call to action for the private sector, academia, and the general public,” Minister Hanif remarked. He also urged attendees to support global climate action through innovation and cooperation, envisioning Indonesia as a global leader in emission reductions and sustainable economic growth.

Deputy for Climate Change Control and Carbon Economic Value Governance, Ary Sudijanto, also delivered a keynote address, emphasizing that carbon trading should inspire a global movement toward sustainability, stating, “Use carbon trading not only to reduce emissions but also to inspire a global movement toward sustainability.”

The international carbon trading is scheduled to launch on January 20, 2025, marking a significant milestone in Indonesia’s climate action agenda.

As Indonesia steps boldly toward a sustainable legacy, this event marked a crucial moment for the nation’s role in shaping the global carbon market.
