From Conflict to Climate Action: A Blue Carbon Project is Taking Root in Aceh Tamiang
News

Aceh Tamiang is on the Verge of Something Big.
In September 2025 Fairatmos, the Government of Aceh Tamiang, and Manka signed a memorandum of understanding to explore a nature based carbon project across roughly 24,000 hectares of mangrove forest. This project is more than forest protection: it is a community first plan to restore livelihoods, build coastal resilience, and deliver verified climate benefits.
What the project will do
-
Protect and restore mangroves across a large coastal landscape, locking carbon while improving coastal protection and biodiversity.
-
Support local livelihoods through community benefit sharing, new working opportunities, and sustainable resource management.
-
Bring credible measurement and verification so climate results are tracked, transparent, and investable.
Local leadership is central. The regent of Aceh Tamiang, Irjen Pol (P). Drs. Armia Pahmi, MH, together with community partners and Manka, will guide on-the-ground planning. Fairatmos will lead technical and market work so the project can meet international standards for quality and transparency.
Why this project matters
Mangroves are one of the most effective coastal ecosystems for storing carbon. Restoring 24,000 hectares can deliver important climate mitigation while also protecting people and nature. For a region recovering from conflict, this project is a pathway to sustainable economic activity and long term resilience.
But restoring mangroves is only the start. To turn restoration into long lasting impact we need the right funding, real transparency, and strong community partnerships.
