Fairatmos at the Forefront of ASEAN’s Climate Action: Insights from the ASEAN Climate Forum 2024

Fairatmos proudly participated in the ASEAN Climate Forum 2024, reaffirming its commitment to advancing climate solutions across the Southeast Asia region. Organized by the ASEAN Alliance on Carbon Markets (AACM), the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN BAC), and Equatorise Advisory, the forum convened over 100 business leaders, policymakers, and sustainability experts with discussions centered on two pivotal themes: scaling carbon markets and advancing cross-border green energy cooperation.

About the ASEAN Climate Forum

The forum aims to catalyze climate initiatives across ASEAN by uniting regional leaders and international partners. Building on the success of its 2023 launch in Jakarta, the 2024 edition continues to drive progress in carbon markets and renewable energy. Key highlights include expanding compliance and voluntary carbon markets (VCMs) and leveraging Southeast Asia’s critical mineral resources to foster green energy collaboration.

Forum Highlights

The opening session highlighted ASEAN's progress in carbon markets with the launch of the Opportunity for Carbon Markets in ASEAN report by AACM and Abatable. Juan Carlos Arredondo Brun from Abatable underscored the vast economic and environmental benefits that carbon markets can bring to the region.

In the segment titled "Unlocking New Growth Engines Through Carbon Market Development in ASEAN", Natalia Rialucky Marsudi, Founder and CEO of Fairatmos, led a key panel discussion. This session explored strategies to advance ASEAN’s carbon neutrality goals and align regional carbon markets.

Key insights from the discussion included:

  1. Milestones in Collaboration: The ASEAN Common Carbon Framework achieved a breakthrough with the signing of a Memorandum of Collaboration among four ASEAN carbon alliance entities at COP29.
  2. Government and Private Sector Roles: Panelists stressed the importance of strong public-private partnerships to expand carbon markets and simplify project approval processes.
  3. Context-Specific Solutions: The discussion highlighted the need for methodologies tailored to ASEAN’s unique circumstances, particularly for Nature-Based Solutions (NBS).
  4. Maintaining Market Integrity: Ensuring trust in carbon markets requires reliable data, standardized methodologies, and robust valuation frameworks to prevent greenwashing.
  5. Challenges and Opportunities: High costs for NBS and prolonged approval timelines were identified as key obstacles, underscoring the urgency for government backing and cross-border cooperation.

Advancing ASEAN’s Climate Goals

The ASEAN Climate Forum 2024 reaffirmed the region’s commitment to climate action through robust policies, innovation, and collaboration. By prioritizing carbon market development and green energy cooperation, ASEAN is poised to unlock significant economic and environmental benefits while leading the charge toward a sustainable future.
