4 Indonesian Companies that Involve Customers in Their Climate Action
Others

Having robust environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets is increasingly important for large corporations. Besides minimizing negative impacts of their operations, customers and investors are preferring to buy products from and invest in companies with good ESG implementation. One example of ESG implementation that is gaining more traction is offsetting carbon emissions. There are several Indonesian companies that choose to engage customers in their carbon offset initiatives:
Bobobox
The popular hotel company Bobobox collaborated with Fairatmos to provide an in-app toggle feature for carbon offset. First introduced in Indonesia Future of Climate Summit (IFCS) 2023, this feature encourages customers to compensate for a portion of the emissions generated from their trips. This initiative supports the target set by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy to reduce up to 50% of emissions from tourism by 2030.
Meratus
Through the #WeAllGoGreen campaign, Meratus - a logistics company - launched the Carbon Neutral service in collaboration with Fairatmos. This service allows customers to neutralize the carbon footprint of their cargo shipment. Customers can visit the Carbon Offset page in Meratus’ website which will convert the number of shipping containers that the customers use into the amount of carbon emissions. Then, customers will complete the offset payment and receive a certificate verified by the Ministry of Environment. The offset payment goes to supporting the Lahendong Geothermal Project in North Sulawesi which offers electricity with lower emissions compared to coal.
Telkomsel
Telecommunication company Telkomsel established the Telkomsel Jaga Bumi initiative which enables users to exchange loyalty points (Telkomsel Poin) for tree donation. Users can access the initiative page on Telkomsel’s website and application where 50 points are equivalent to Rp5,000 tree donation value and 2.93 kg of CO2 absorbed. Besides that, the initiative page offers a carbon calculator feature which can be used to calculate a user's carbon footprint from the use of handphone, laptop, AC, TV, car, and motorbike.
Generali
PT Asuransi Jiwa Generali Indonesia (Generali) created a program called PLAN & PLANT where they plant 1 mangrove for 1 insurance policy purchased. For the 2023-2024 period, the program gathered 10,000 mangrove trees planted in Global Geopark Ciletuh, Sukabumi, which is equivalent to offsetting 3.2 million kilograms of carbon. Generali also supported a similar planting program initiated by the Association of Indonesian Life Insurance (AAJI).
